The Time Legacy

The Time Legacy is the most tender and heartbreaking work in The Sunflower Series. Three aging sunflowers — their petals curling at the edges, their eyes deep and sorrowful — lean over a small, budding flower that is just beginning to open. It is a painting about guardianship across generations, about love that persists across distance and time.

This is the story of the grandparents. When Yosan and his wife left Cuba for the United States, their children stayed behind — cared for by the grandparents who became, in those years of waiting, the towering flowers bending protectively over the young ones growing in the dark. The older flowers are not dying — they are giving. Their age is their wisdom, their legacy is the life they shelter.

The blues and yellows of this painting carry the weight of years lived and years apart. The small flower at the bottom does not yet know the size of the love protecting it. One day it will. The Time Legacy is Yosan's thank-you — to those who kept the roots alive while he and his wife built the ground for new ones to take hold in a land of freedom.
