Subtle is perhaps the most emotionally complex work of Yosan's 2016 series — a monumental eye emerges from a swirling vortex of blue, grey, and earth tones, gazing outward with an intensity that makes the viewer feel seen. The title is deliberately ironic: there is nothing subtle about the scale of presence this painting commands.
The eye — a recurring symbol in Yosan's practice — is rendered here with extraordinary technical mastery. Layers of oil build the iris into a three-dimensional form, while the surrounding storm of brushstrokes creates a sense of psychological turbulence. The work sits at the intersection of portraiture and abstraction.
Subtle has been acquired by a private collector and is no longer available for purchase. It stands as one of the defining works of Yosan's 2016 body of work — a painting that established his signature visual vocabulary of eyes, vortices, and the tension between the seen and the hidden.
