About This Work
Rise Up is Yosan Leon's most direct artistic response to David Gilmour's call — a painting born from the same emotional territory as the Pink Floyd song it echoes. Where the song is a declaration of solidarity with Ukraine, this canvas is its visual counterpart: sunflowers, Ukraine's national flower, rendered with dramatic force and psychological intensity.
The composition presents multiple sunflowers, each with a deeply expressive eye at its center, in varying states — some open and defiant, others beginning to bend under invisible weight. Together they form a chorus of resilience: the ones that stand tall lifting the others, the ones that falter sustained by the roots they share. It is a painting about collective strength and the refusal to surrender.
Leon's technique is at its most powerful here — thick impasto passages alternate with areas of fine detail, creating a surface that vibrates with energy. The dark background makes the yellows and blues luminous, almost electric. Rise Up is not merely a beautiful painting — it is a statement, a prayer, and a promise painted in oil.
