Hotel Inglaterra

Hotel Inglaterra depicts the scene outside Havana's oldest surviving hotel — a 19th-century neoclassical landmark that has witnessed more than a century of Cuban history. A classic American car is parked outside, its occupants negotiating with a passerby, while a cyclist weaves through the frame.

The painting captures a quintessentially Cuban scene: the collision of architectural grandeur and everyday improvisation, of history and the present moment coexisting on the same pavement. The warm sepia tones give the work a timeless quality, as if the scene exists outside of any particular decade.

Yosan's mastery of perspective is fully evident here — the recession of the colonnade draws the eye deep into the canvas, while the chrome of the automobile in the foreground anchors the viewer in the immediate present.
