Capitolio

Capitolio is perhaps the most architecturally ambitious work in the American Dream series. The iconic dome of El Capitolio Nacional rises majestically at the end of a narrow Havana street, flanked by colonial colonnades and bathed in warm amber light.

In the foreground, a 1950s American automobile advances toward us — the tension between the grandeur of the architecture and the humble mechanics of street life perfectly balanced. Pedestrians populate the middle ground, their figures rendered with the same meticulous attention as the architectural details.

Painted in 2014, Capitolio captures Havana at a pivotal historical moment — a city on the threshold of change, its monumental past intact, its future uncertain. The painting is a document as much as it is a work of art.
