About This Work
American Dream opens the series with its most iconic image — a cherry-red 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air ablaze with color against a monochromatic Havana streetscape. The contrast is deliberate and powerful: the car, a symbol of American prosperity and freedom, gleams in full color while the world around it remains frozen in sepia.
Painted with extraordinary photorealistic precision in acrylic, every chrome detail, every reflection in the paint, every crack in the Havana pavement is rendered with the patience and skill of a master. The yellow Cuban license plate — HFW 9013 — grounds the work in specific time and place.
This work is the cornerstone of the American Dream series — a meditation on desire, nostalgia, and the complex relationship between Cuba and the American dream that floated just 90 miles away.
